Fit Radiator Valve

Posted by in Acton Plumber, on May 9, 2014

Before you attempt to replace a valve on a radiator, you must prepare the area first. Lay cloths or old rags all around underneath the valve you are replacing, this will catch any water that leaks as you undo and release the valve. NOTE: You could use a decent sized bowl instead. To begin:Hold the main body of the valve using a wrench, or you can even use water pump-pliers and then use an adjustable spanner to undo the nuts that secure the valve to the pipe and also to the adapter in the end of the radiator. Acton Plumbers can replace old radiator valves. Once you have done this you can follow the guide below:A). Take the valve away from the pipe, if you are changing a lock shield valve, shut it off and make sure that you note down how many turns you make as this will help when re-fitting (to keep the balance).B). Undo and remove the valve adapter. It is possible that you can use an adjustable spanner on the adaptor, if not, you will need to undo it using a hexagonal (radiator) spanner. An Acton Plumber uses radiator spanners.Fit Replacement:Having cleaned the threads on the radiator, then use PTFE tape and wrap four or five times around the threads. Connect the adapter to the end of the radiator, screwing and tightening with a spanner. Push the valve cap nut and the new olive over the pipe and screw on the valve, do not tighten for the moment. Hold the body of the valve using a wrench and line it up with adaptor and then tighten up the nut holding the pipework and valve together. Make sure that everything is now tight. Refill the system and check for any leaks.
